The Gay People’s Chronicle World AIDS Day issue is on the web and at newsstands across the state.

These are the stories in the November 21, 2008 issue.

Living with HIV in small-town Ohio
Michael McKinnis is a gay, HIV positive man living in rural Ohio. He was born and raised in Marion, about 40 miles north of Columbus, with a population of about 35,000, and still lives there.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121081.htm

Thousands turn out to protest Proposition 8
Cleveland pair’s website brings out demonstrations in 300 cities
Cleveland - “Proposition 8 is the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back,” says Willow Witte, one of the two organizers of JoinTheImpact.com, a website that helped people around the nation coordinate protests against California’s marriage ban amendment on November 15.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121082.htm

Cleveland to add TG non-bias and partner registry
Cleveland - City Council is considering measures to make this the third Ohio city with a domestic partner registry and the fifth to protect transgender citizens from discrimination.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121083.htm

HIV doesn’t care if you’re on the ‘down low’ or not
New infections of HIV continue to be on the rise across Ohio. Often, various misconceptions lead people to think that they are not at risk because HIV happens “to other people.” Many people fail to understand what is really happening and to protect themselves from HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121084.htm

Infections jump 45% among young Central Ohioans
Columbus - The number of Central Ohio teenagers and young adults infected with HIV has exploded 45 percent in just three years. Of all the Franklin County women living with HIV, nearly three-quarters are African American. As dozens of countries commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1, Central Ohioans need to be reminded that the epidemic continues right here at home.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121085.htm

The last of a dying breed
I am a 20-year survivor living with AIDS, and another World AIDS Day is fast approaching.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1121086.htm
These are the stories in the November 7, 2008 issue.

Marriage lost
Historic presidential election also brought three ban amendments
While many LGBT people were cheering the historic landslide election of Barack Obama, they were slapped by voters who passed anti-gay constitutional amendments and ballot issues in four states.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1107081.htm

Ohio seats go to gay and friendly candidates
Two out judicial candidates had a victory and a defeat in Ohio elections on November 4, while the Ohio House and several of the state’s U.S. House seats moved closer to the LGBT communitynity.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1107082.htm

Making campus gay-friendly is aim of new scholarship
Wooster, Ohio - To honor a longtime gay employee, the College of Wooster has created a scholarship for students who work to make the campus more LGBT welcoming.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/november/1107083.htm

Evenings Out
It’s a period piece, and a good one
‘Boys in the Band’ has lost some of its taboo, but still has the power to sting
He who laughs last, laughs best. Or the longest, depending on which version of the proverb you remember.
That is most certainly true of the film version of The Boys in the Band, vilified by early gay liberation groups for its unflattering portrayal of seven queens having a birthday party.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/evenings_out/evenings_out.htm
Elton John talks about his place in LGBT history
In 1994, educators across the country began working to counteract the lack of information about LGBT people in textbooks. The efforts of Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson led to the creation of LGBT History Month in October.
This issue marks the beginning of the third year the Gay People’s Chronicle, along with other newspapers across the nation, honor LGBT History Month with a series of articles by and about people, organizations and events that shaped the world and continue to strive for greater equality.
For the project, Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal spoke with Elton John about his work and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Have you ever been to your neighborhood bar and been served by a city councilman, the lieutenant governor and the assistant director of the state lottery? Well, now is your chance as Cleveland City Council member Matt Zone, his brother-in-law Lee Fisher, sister Beth Zone and the rest of their family throw their annual celebrity bartending night to raise money for the Cleveland AIDS Walk. Come to the Parkview Nite Club on Friday, September 26 after 7 pm, and make sure to tip big, since all gratuities will be donated in honor of the late Marty Zone, who died of AIDS. Barack Obama on DOMA, 'don't ask,' and torture
The Gay History Project requested interviews with both the Democratic and Republican candidates for president. The format for both was to be the same, the same questions, with no follow-up questions and the same time limit. Since April, we have repeatedly reached out to Republican Sen. John McCain's press representative Jill Hazelbaker by phone, letter and e-mail.
Dayton - Republican presidential nominee John McCain announced a little-known governor of a state with fewer residents than the Cleveland metropolitan area on August 29. The choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin was met with initial surprise. As time passes, however, it is clear that the choice was made to please the Christian conservative base of the Republican Party, much of which is anti-LGBT.
Denver - “Barack Obama will close the book on the old politics of race and gender and group against group and straight against gay,” promised the ailing Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts in a surprise Monday night prime time speech to the Democratic National Convention.
Cleveland - Plans for an “upscale ‘gay-friendly’ lounge” in the former Moda nightclub on West 25th Street were scuppered on August 19 after a local block club voted against supporting developers’ efforts.
Stephanie Tubbs Jones was a friend to the community
“Count on me,” Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones told the Cleveland Human Rights Campaign dinner in May 2003. “I promise that neither your voice nor mine will be silenced, because we’re going to take this to the Capitol, to the White House, and to the streets.”
Evenings Out
Coming out as stand-ups
Dayton - Nine times out of ten, when a trio of queens are putting on a show that gets written up in an LGBT newspaper, you can be sure that someone is going to wind up lip-syncing “I’m Every Woman.”
Equality Ohio drops its opposition to sick leave act
Columbus - Ohio’s statewide LGBT advocacy group has backed off its opposition to a sick leave initiative likely to be on the November ballot.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/august/0801081.htm
Where's my Chronicle?
Newspaper moves to biweekly publication
Readers have been calling, asking why they could not find a copy of the Gay People’s Chronicle last week.
The answer is simple: The newspaper has returned to biweekly publication, publishing a new issue every other Friday.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/august/0801082.htm
Enjoy a cruise, parties, and a picnic at Black Gay and Proud
Cleveland - Northeast Ohio’s African American LGBT community and their allies will gather this weekend for the eleventh annual Black Gay and Proud Celebration.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/august/0801083.htm

Neighbor dispute turns ugly with anti-gay epithets
Cleveland - Anti-gay harassment turned to threats of violence over the last two months as the next-door neighbors of a gay man increased their verbal assaults.
http://gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories08/august/0801084.htm
Cleveland Pride opens a permanent storefront office
Cleveland - A month after bringing the LGBT Pride parade and festival back into the black despite a rainout of this year’s celebration, the event’s organizers unveiled their new office.
'Don’t ask' hearing evokes the law's 1993 creation
Washington, D.C. - Polls now show that three quarters of Americans think gays and lesbians should be able to serve openly in the armed services. But the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law requiring them to stay closeted will be difficult to repeal, if last week’s congressional hearing is any indication.
Shaken, stirred, whatever
It’s 1955, and France sets a bumbling, gay American spy loose in Egypt. What could possibly go wrong?
A connection between spies and homosexuality swirls through popular culture, now perhaps more than any other time in history.
